What to write in your letters
When writing to your trainee at Fort Sill, it’s important to remember that they are kept very busy during their time there – don’t expect to hear from them all of the time.
However, just because your trainee isn’t able to write back consistently doesn’t mean you can’t continue to keep sending them letters. Writing letters to your trainee at Fort Sill is a great way to keep them motivated and show your support. Here are a few ideas for what to write in your letters to your trainee:
Share your day with them.
One thing many trainees will experience during training is the feeling of missing out on things back home. Simply sharing your day with them is a great way to make them feel included. Even if you think your day was not worth writing about, your trainee will appreciate you thinking of them.
Family or community updates.
Similar to sharing your day with your trainee, sending them any family or community updates is another great way to help them feel connected to home.

Motivational quotes.
Basic training is not meant to be easy, and your trainee will have days where they might feel like quitting. Sending them motivational quotes or stories is a great way to keep their spirits high.

Sending care packages to Fort Sill
Each battalion has different rules for sending care packages to trainees during basic training. It’s important to make sure you follow the rules that are shared in the form letter that you receive after your trainee arrives at Fort Sill.
Emergency contact information
Should an emergency arise, the only means of notifying your trainee is through your local American Red Cross. To speak to a Red Cross Emergency Communications Specialist call: 1-877-272-7337. The field office in your vicinity will contact the Lawton, Oklahoma field office who will, in turn, contact the Red Cross calls battalion. From there, the Red Cross will contact you and coordinate the next steps. In dire emergencies affecting immediate family members (sibling or parent), emergency leave may be granted. Other leaves of absence during training are not normally authorized.
