Writing to letters to someone in basic training is one of the best ways to keep them motivated and support them throughout their journey. Though they may not be able to write back to you as often as you would like, they are sure to enjoy all of your letters from home. Here are some basic training letter ideas to help your writer’s block.

A Letter to a trainee at Army basic training

Dear Joe,

I hope your first two weeks of Army Basic Training have been going well. Even though you are only in phase one (Red Phase) right now, I know you are giving it your all and excelling each day. Back home we have been taking the dogs for more walks so that they can keep up with you when you come back. What is the weather like? Do you have two or three roommates? Are the Drill Sergeants intense all the time? If you have time to write back, keep us updated about your life there. We are rooting for you all the way and have immense pride in you. Keep pushing through, we love and miss you!

A Letter to a recruit at Navy boot camp

Dear Emma,

We are so eager to hear about your first three weeks at Navy boot camp! While we miss you dearly at home, we are so proud of what you are doing and have lots of confidence that you will prevail. What was P-week like? Was week 1 the hardest, like you anticipated? How are your roommates and how is the food? We think of you everyday and hope you are doing well.

Dad just started a new job downtown and is really liking it. While mom is continuing to take her art classes, she has also been attending a book club a lot. I’m still going to school but counting down the days till summer (only 19 left!). By the time I’m off for summer break, you’ll be in week 6 of basic! I know you can do it!

Writing to your recruit at Marine boot camp

Dear Mike,

Thanks for your letter the other day, it was so great to hear from you and learn about your first two weeks at Marine Corps Boot camp. It sounds really tough, not anything shy of our expectations, but we also know you are really tough, too. How have things been since last Tuesday? Did you get things straightened out with your drill instructor? Are you and your roommates still getting along? And how is the food? Feel free to answer these questions in bullet points, we know you are so busy.

No pressure to respond to us quickly. We are eagerly counting down the days till we get to visit you!

Writing a Letter to a trainee at Air Force basic training

Dear Jenna,

It’s crazy to think that you are at Air Force basic training right now! While I am sitting at home, I know you are busting your tail off in physical training and working hard to understand new military concepts. Speaking of, a lot of the military stuff is fairly new to me. I know you are really busy, but could you give me a brief synopsis of the main things you do at training? I’m so intrigued to hear how you are doing and how your experience has been. If you need anything, I’m just a Sandboxx-letter away!

Sending a Letter to a recruit at Coast Guard boot camp

Dear Antonio,

How are you? It’s amazing that you are in Coast Guard boot camp right now! We always talked about it being your dream, and now it’s finally happening for real. What is it like? Have you been surprised at all by anything? Everyone in town thinks you are just so awesome for doing this, even though I know you do it because you are selfless and want to help your country. It’s just super cool, and I feel so lucky to know someone like you. Write me back if you can, we’d love to hear from you.

General Letters to Someone at Basic Training

Dear Recruit,

How are you? We think of you every day and wonder what you are up to. How has basic been so far? We hope it’s challenging for you, but that you feel prepared for these challenges. Do you have multiple roommates? If so, what are they like and what are their names? We’re sure you’ve met all different kinds of people at boot camp. Anyone in particular that you’ve really clicked with? Tell us about the food, the barracks, the drill instructors and other leaders.

Everything with us has been going well. We make lots of home cooked meals, as we’re trying to eat healthier. The dogs are also doing well and the neighbors frequently ask how you are. If you can, let us know so we can report back to your fan club. We are so proud and have the utmost faith in you.

Dear Recruit,

How are things going? We miss you so much and think of you every day. You are already three weeks into training and we could not be more proud of you. How are your roommates? Do you like the people in your company? What is the food like? Tell us more about how the weeks have been going and if there’s anything we can do for you. We hope, of course, that you are doing as well as you can despite the reality of basic training.

At home we haven’t been up to much. We went out to the Farmer’s market the other day and then took the dogs for a walk. Christie stopped by the house to ask if there was any update on you. People really do care and are curious about how you are doing. We can’t wait to see you in a few short weeks!! Hang in there.

Send a comforting Letter to basic training

Dear Friend/Co-worker/Sibling/Child,

Based on your last letter, it sounds like things are starting to get tough. Of course, we understood basic training was going to be hard, but it is understandable that parts of it have challenged you more than you expected or have thrown you off guard.

We know that what you are doing now is one of the bravest things a person can elect to do. You are courageous, humble and kind, and we know that is why you desire to serve a cause greater than yourself. Nonetheless, we acknowledge your struggle and are walking it with you, maybe not literally but through these letters. We have immense faith that you are stronger than you believe and have limitless abilities; we know it just takes you believing it, too. Remember that you can do this, and to reach out to others for support. We are so proud of you!
